Technician Tips
1. Stick to the basics. That means perform your visual inspection, check for bulletins and P.I.’s, check fuses, battery condition. Always no matter what cover the basics. K.I.S.S. is true on everything.

This goes out to all the flat rate technicians.

I feel your pain, but I would not have it any other wayIt gives you control over your paycheck that rewards hustle and knowledgeIt should establish a get it done mindset that will transfer to everything in life. When you get the house cleaned in ten minutes and it usually takes other hours you will see what I am talking about. We waste no time. The best tips I can give techs are the following.

  1. 1. Stick to the basics. That means perform your visual inspection, check for bulletins and P.I.’s, check fuses, battery condition. Always no matter what cover the basics. K.I.S.S. is true on everything. I have seen many techs over complicate a simple blown fuse and can say I have done it myself. Never skip the basics.

  1. 2. Take everything you can get. Techs complain about dispatchers having their favorites. I will be the first to tell them of course they do. Their favorite is the guy who does not say no. The guy that no matter how busy he is will take a crappy job or a decent job and get it done. He manages his time well and does not complain. You see a lot of techs that spend as much time complaining that it would take to knock out the infotainment job they did not want. Take a guess at what complaining pays? Nothing. Techs will say it has been like this for years no matter who dispatches he gets fed. Have you thought there may be a reason? We are not passing out participation trophies. We are passing out work that needs done in a timely manner for the customer and we do not have time to keep going to you to hear no I do not want that job. Eventually we stop asking and wait for you to ask for work. Take anything you can get, knock it out and move on to the next job. If you need help, ask just to do not back burn anything. You will be the go-to guy.

  1. 3. Be available. What I mean is easy to find. No one wants to have to track you down to give you work. If you are not in your bay or in the dispatcher's face looking for work, you may get skipped over. Save the smoking and talking for another time.

  1. 4. Lock your phone up in your box. I have tried to pay someone an extra ten hours to put their cell phone in my drawer. Told them if they do not turn an extra ten, I would pay them it anyway if they kept working. When I started working on cars cell phones were used to call and that was about it. They stayed in your box and you stayed working. Not walking around talking either but working. Get rid of distractions and work. Hustle beats talent any day when the talent is not hustling.

  2.

  1. 5. Learn technology. This field is not getting less technologically advanced, instead it is growing rapidly. Learn about your computer which is your number one tool. Learn about communication systems, autonomous vehicles, E.V, and everything you can. That is the path automotive is heading.
